OUR PROJECTS
Every year, FLL teams compete in the Research Project category by coming up with innovative solutions to real world issues based on that year's theme.
NATURE'S FURY (2013-14)
The theme this year is to come up with ways to help when intense natural events meet the places people live, work & play . . . How can we prepare, stay safe and rebuild?
Did you know that insurance companies pay $5 billion a year in claims and 53 lives are lost each year due to lightning strikes? Or that the only method currently available that offers protection from lightning was invented almost 265 years ago . . . by Ben Franklin? Well, the Moovers set out to use the principles of physics to "Tame Nature's Fury" by coming up with a method to neutralize lightning before it leaves the clouds. Pretty cool, hey?
SENIOR SOLUTIONS (2012-13)
The Project challenge this season was to investigate the stage of growth known as being a senior and create an innovative solution to the problems they face which will help them stay independent, engaged, and connected!!
The Moovers identified that 1 out of every 3 seniors fall and injuries resulting from those falls are the 5th leading cause of death in seniors!! They came up with a proactive solution that "mootivates" seniors to continue to remain active and exercise . . . which maintains muscle tone . . . which positively impacts balance . . . which can prevent falls!!
FOOD FACTOR (2011-12)
For the 2011-12 season, the FLL team challenge was to improve the quality of food by finding innovative ways to prevent food contamination and spoilage.
The Moovers’ project focused on Listeria detection in milk. Listeria is one of the deadliest food pathogens. The girls consulted with a local dairy producer and a researcher at a large pharmaceutical company to identify a simple, consumer-friendly detection tablet.
BODY FORWARD (2010-11)
For this season, the FLL theme was to identify a problem with the human body that impacts a person's health and come up with a solution to fix it.
Since one of the team members was diagnosed with Celiac Disease, an autoimmune disease caused by gluten in food, we chose that as our focus. We developed a "pen-like" device that could detect if gluten was originally in the food or was there from cross-contamination during the preparation.
SMART MOVE (2009-10)
The FLL team challenge this year was to identify a problem in transportation or moving things from one place to another . . . could be transporting materials, people, etc. . . . and come up with a smart solution.
Being only 8-9 years old and newbies to the FLL program, the team picked something they could totally identify with: transporting kids to and from their school via parents' cars, not the school bus, by using the parent pick-up/drop-off line at their school . . . a huge problem!
